Topic 25: Lance Armstrong

"Is it a good thing that Lance Amrstrong has been exposed for cheating?"

Now, this is an unusual topic for me to debate.  I am VERY anti-drugs, very anti-cheating, and a HUGE advocate for always telling the truth.  What Lance Armstrong did was take drugs, cheat and lie, so you would think that my opinion on this enflamed issue would be crystal clear.

However, to me it seems that something else had come out of the Lance Armstrong wonder story than just benefits for him.  He gave hope to millions of cancer sufferers with the message that no matter what problems you have, you can accomplish anything if you set your mind to it, and that cancer is not the be all and end all.  This message was an incredible one, and is more powerful than any drug, placebo or advice.

Now think, that message has just been obliterated.  The message is now, no one ever recovers from cancer.  Even Lance Armstrong had to cheat to win.  That wonderful hope has been totally destroyed and replaced with misery and doubt.  Yes, he did the wrong thing, but is it worth destroying everybody else in the world just to expose him???

I also question the motivations of those who exposed him.  They kept their mouths shut, under the impression that he was retiring, and they could have their turn at winning.  It was only after he announced a come-back that they stabbed him in the back.  The only reason that they would have had for keeping their mouths shut for so long, is that they were cheating too.

I do not know how this information could have been handled, but I do know that it was not done properly.  The sad truth is that unfortunately, the media and those that watch it, do not care about the bigger picture, they just care about the juiciest story and the most controvertial head line.  I guess all hope for humanity really is lost.

Do you have an opinion on this confusing topic?  If so, let us know!

  1. I am relieved that there are some people who bother to look behind the news headlines & ponder the real story. Most people today are too lazy to bother & they worship the virtue & veracity of the media. The media's sole purpose is to make money & if the truth were to ruin a good story it is easily cast aside. The motives of the people who give these stories to the media are never questioned or investigated as this may affect their pay.
AND WE THE PEOPLE BLINDLY FOLLOW THE MEDIA, EVEN UNTO OUR DOOM !!

  2. I do think the media likes to sensationalise things, and they are in a position to offer large amounts of money to pay people off for the gossip.
The media don't care about anything but dollar signs. That was evident when they put the hospital that Prince Wills wife was staying at through the ringer for accidentally letting a prank call through.
They didn't want to help step up security, or protect Kate.. they just wanted the scoop and the sales. It cost a life. It's sad when a scoop is more valuable than a life..
